Non-tariff barriers in regional trade
Establish a resolution mechanism for non-tariff barriers in the region
Implementation is underway.
Where this stands
Reporting structures exist through the monthly monitoring committee; a resolution mechanism backed by high-level engagement does not.
Why this reform was agreed
Despite progress at EAC level, where over 1,000 traded products have been harmonised, non-tariff barriers continue to constrain cross-border trade. Traders still face delays at border posts from differing sanitary and phytosanitary requirements, inconsistent application of quality standards and multiple inspections.
Ongoing and planned interventions
A monthly monitoring committee has been established, putting in place structures for reporting non-tariff barriers across the region.
